Sea Eyes
2007
Oil on canvas
45 x45"
Sea Eyes is a portrait of a woman wearing a dark hooded jacket looking out at the ocean. Her windswept hair partially obscures her face and her expression is unreadable, yet I have always imagined she desires something as vast as the landscape, triggered by looking out at an impossibly blue and turbulent sea.

Much like when Romeo is introduced in Baz Luhrman’s film version of Romeo and Juliet, she stands at the boundary of land and sea and pauses to ponder her existence before walking on along the ocean shore.
